The mobile workforce
In any organisation you are likely to find desk bound employees, knowledge workers, on-site nomads, and road warriors. To a greater or lesser extent all these employees are away from a desk phone for some part of the working day. The issue faced by the organisation is how to keep these staff productive when they are away from their desks. A robust and reliable on-site or off-site mobility solution can be the key to increasing their productivity, helping them to be more effective in their work and providing them with the tools they need to do their jobs. |

Desk bound : Even desk bound staff move around. Estimates suggest that during a working day a desk bound job involves the employee being away from their desks for around 40 minutes each day. During this time they are not available to take phone calls. When they return to their desks they spend valuable productive time responding to voice mail and messages.
Knowledge workers : These are key staff in the firms decision making processes. If they cannot be reached information may not be available and decisions delayed. Typically, knowledge workers can spend up to 2 hours away from their phone during a working day. If they cannot be contacted during that time important deals could be delayed.
On-site nomads : These roles often benefit directly from better communications. Nursing managers, hotel staff, retail staff security personnel, teachers for example, generally roam around an organisation spending most of the working day away from a desk phone.
On-site mobility solutions can be the key enabler for improving the service provided by these employees.
With an on-site mobility solution hotel staff are more responsive to guests’ needs and retail staff are always available to answer customer enquiries or provide advice. In the case of security personnel and other lone workers an on-site mobility solution can provide a lifeline in the case of an accident as well as providing a reliable communications link across which to report breaches of security or hazards.
Off-site road warriors : Salespersons, service personnel and community care workers are included in this group. Road warriors spend most of their time off-site and when on-site typically are away from a desk phone for 50% of the time.
Mobile phones have been an essential tool for these employees for many years. The problem is that the mobile phone is not an integral part of the company’s telephone system. With Vertical Wave this can become part of the phone system.
