When do you need to use a gateway
A Patton gateway is required whenever different telephone solutions using different protocols need to work together. Typically this will be when a solution consists of traditional analogue telephone equipment and new VoIP telephone equipment. Some scenarios where gateways are used in these circumstances could include,
The new IP telephony solution needs to connect to the public ISDN or analogue lines
An analogue fax machine or other analogue device needs to conect to the new IP telephony solution
A traditinal PBX in a branch office needs to connect to an IP phone solution in the headquarters

Protecting legacy investments
